PARIS (Reuters) – France is ready to discuss the autonomy of Guadeloupe from French Caribbean territory if it is in the interests of the people living there, government minister Sebastien Lecornu said.

Guadeloupe and the nearby French Martinique have been protesting for several days against COVID-19 measures that have led to violence.

Lecornu, France’s overseas territorial minister, said in a YouTube video released Friday night that some elected officials in Guadalupe had raised the issue of autonomy, changing its status as an overseas region.

“The government is ready to talk about this. There is no such thing as a bad debate, as long as those discussions serve to solve the real daily problems of the people of Guadalupe,” he said.

That said, one of several initiatives he said the Paris government would do in Guadeloupe was, among other things, improving health care, infrastructure projects and a project to create jobs for young people.

The French government announced this week that public sector workers in Guadeloupe and Martinique will delay the requirement to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

This sparked protests, sparking long-standing complaints about the standard of living and the relationship with Paris.

There is a historical distrust of Guadeloupe over how the French government handles health crises after being exposed to toxic pesticides used in banana plantations in the 1970s.
