Amid sharp criticism of Joe Root’s captaincy as a result of England’s ashes in the series, former skipper Mike Atherton said a viable alternative to replacing the entire Ben Stokes in Yorkshireman is viable.
Atherton also said coach Chris Silverwood should be shown the door after the series as Australia have already finished with two games to go.

Root, who has not won any of his three Ashes series, wanted to discuss the long-term future of his captaincy after England lost in the third round in Melbourne and lost 14 races.
“There have been so many mistakes here, from selection to strategy, where the captain has to take personal responsibility … This could have been a much tighter series if Root had done things well on the pitch,” Atherton wrote. The Times.
“Root has been a good captain in England and has always carried himself brilliantly and is a great ambassador for the sport, but after five years of work and three failures in Ashes, including two huge Australian campaigns, that’s time for someone else to get involved.
“Ben Stokes is a viable alternative, having done a great job as a substitute in the summer.

Atherton added that Silverwood had a bad appointment and was “out of his depth.”
“At the moment there seems to be a lack of authority and a lack of will to challenge the players,” he said.
“There’s no way Silverwood can (or should) survive from the Ashes, and that should allow him to pick up the coach’s reorganization and responsibilities.”
The fourth ash test will begin in Sydney on January 5th.
