In a message to parents, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott Brabrand said Monday that the lawsuit, which he hopes will help resolve the dispute quickly between the governor and local councils, requires a public health measure.

“It is imperative that decisions about education and school safety be made locally in the best interests of our students and the community,” Brabrand said.

The lawsuit alleges that the state’s constitution gives local school boards the power to direct their constituencies. He also mentions a state law that requires school systems to follow federal health guidelines, including recommendations for universal masking.

Democrats praised the school council for challenging Youngkin on Monday.
