What does metaverse mean, and what is it like in Malaysia? – Wired PR Lifestyle Story

Newsflash: We already live in metaverse. But not everyone understands how or what it means.

And no, Mark Zuckerberg didn’t invent it. The term “verse” is not new. The concept dates back to 1992 when author Neal Stephenson (acknowledged to have coined the term) used it in his science fiction novel “Snow Crash”.

He depicted avatars that would meet in dystopian cyberpunk novels, realistic 3D buildings, and other virtual reality environments.

Please explain more.

The “metaverse” can be broken into “meta” and “verse.” The word meta has many meanings, but in this case, its meaning will probably be related to the definitions of the ancient Greeks: “beyond,” “after,” or “behind.”

Meanwhile, “verse” comes from the word “universe” and is often used as a suffix to describe a specific field or field. Take for example the word “Twitterverse” or “Twittersphere”, which is used to describe the spaces where users interact on the social media platform.

Together, the two words give meaning to “beyond the universe,” which is generally understood as a virtual world that is beyond our physical world or overlaps.

At its core, the metaverse is a figurative and virtual space where you can live different lives, be what you want to be, make friends around the world, do what you want, and so on. It’s an extension of what you can achieve in real life.

Basically, if you’ve played a role-playing game or a life-simulation game, chances are you’re already part of the metaverse.

Be it The Sims, Second Life or Genshin Impact, playing games like this and living your virtual life in them depends on what you would do in a metaverse by encouraging social connections (in the latter two).

Yes, there are. But they don’t have to have a metaverse to make a metaverse. They are more of a modern complement to the basic concept of metaverse as we know it, taking the virtual universe to the next level.

Big tech companies are taking advantage of this by announcing their own version of the Meta (formerly Facebook) metaverse, with the use of its Oculus Quest VR headphones to allow users to shop, socialize, work, and so on in the virtual world. .

Imagine that you don’t have to leave your home, and yet you can be as “present” as you can be in these different settings. But if you still want a taste of the real world, then Meta also has something for you: AR glasses.

It’s still in the works, but the company’s goal is to provide users with a hybrid reality. You can still invite your friends to your real home, but they don’t have to be there. Put on your AR glasses and enjoy the night with your friends ’avatars.

Of course, this ambitious version of the metaverse is not yet fully fleshed out, and there are still no notable examples to speak of.

Why should I care about all this?

Like it or not, this will undoubtedly be our future. Almost everything we interact with online today is a component of the metaverse.

The pandemic also accelerated the takeover of the metaverse. For me, it was through Genshin Impact and Gather that I relied heavily on both to maintain a look of normalcy at the beginning of the pandemic.

I’m not sure I’m ready to live a fully virtual life, but I won’t say no to trying. Since we don’t have anything concrete yet, it’s easy to see this future through pink glasses.

It may seem very interesting and exciting on the cover, but not enough research has yet been done to understand the effect of metaverse on the human psyche. Here we need to be careful, call problems and pay attention to criticisms of these technologies.

On the brightest side, metaverse can also hold many jobs for the future, as these virtual worlds, their environments, the avatars that people can use, and the talents to flesh out more will be needed.

But they are taking steps to catch up. Recently, iCandy bought Lemon Sky Studios with the intention of developing casual and AAA games within their metaverse and blockchain initiatives.

It’s still early days, but the development of the metaverse and the pros and cons we know will surely deserve attention.
