Some may think that imprisonment is a deterrent to crime. But do prisons really rehabilitate prisoners, and do they make society safer?
Many inmate advocates believe that they are paid prisons against public safety. They are calling for a more humane approach that will recognize the humanity of convicted criminals, rehabilitate them, and give them the skills to live forever outside of prison.
People living in prisons suffer from a lack of privacy, inadequate access to family members, and other stressors that can harm those who suffer from trauma or mental health problems.
In this section of The Stream, we will report on the prison system, its impact on prisoners, and the case of prison rehabilitation.
