Since Nov. 2, Peng’s silence has caught the attention of Steve Simon, president and CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), and called on the Chinese government to conduct a “complete, fair and transparent” investigation into the matter.

“The recent events in China about a WTA player, Peng Shuai, are of great concern. Peng Shuai and all women deserve to be heard, not censored. The accusation about the behavior of a former Chinese leader must be a sexual assault. He must be treated very seriously.”

Simon said several sources told the WTA that the Chinese Tennis Association (including the CTA) said Peng was “safe and without physical threats,” but had not yet been informed of this since he released the allegations on Nov. 2. Simon said he knew he was in Beijing but could not confirm where he was.

He added that although the WTA has no control over what China is doing about the situation, “it will not back down from that position.”
