Most mysteries and spy movies are based on the need to send messages that self-destruct, but you don’t have to be an international secret agent to do the same with your texts.
In fact, most popular chat apps have some sort of disappearing message, which means that if you don’t want a permanent record of your conversation, you don’t need to have one. In fact Signal encrypted messaging application has made it a feature of recently disappeared messages default.
While it’s convenient to have retrospective chat archives for sentimental and practical reasons (recipes, addresses, instructions, etc.), there are other times when you don’t have to save anything. Here’s what to do.
Here’s a note for all of these apps, because the people you’re communicating with can take a screenshot of what you said or, if the screenshots are locked, they can take a screenshot with another device. Some of them promise to notify you that your messages are a screenshot or downloaded, but there is always a solution. This should be taken into account when choosing who to chat with and how much to share.
The signal
You have the option of disappearing messages in Signal for each conversation, and it is now available by default or via an individual conversation: you can switch between any missing message and persistent message at any time. To do this, tap the three dots (top right) on any thread, and select Disappearing messages.
You can select anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks after viewing messages (or Disable to disable the feature). You can also set a custom timer if you prefer the preset and if you don’t like it, you can tell a message to disappear in 60 seconds. Each time you change this setting, an alert appears in the chat, and anyone who submits thereafter complies with the established rules.
To set the default message expiration time for all your chats, open the main application settings page and select Privacy and Default timer for new chats (under Disappearing messages). This applies to all chats you start from then on, not conversations on your phone.
WhatsApp messages that are disappearing currently work with images and videos rather than text. The recipient has 14 days to see what you have sent, and it disappears as soon as they see it.
Inside WhatsApp, open the conversation you want to send a photo or video clip, tap the camera icon at the bottom, and then capture your content. You will see a small icon 1 in the circle, next to the green send icon – tap to turn your message into an image or video.
You can enter a title with a photo or clip, which disappears. Once you’ve sent everything, you won’t see it from your end: You’ll only see one photo or video entry in the conversation, with 1 small icon next to it. The open text will change after viewing.
Snapchat
Snapchat didn’t invent messages that disappear, but it was certainly helpful. From the main conversation list screen, you can tap any contact to start the conversation, or type the typing icon (top right) if the person you want to talk to isn’t on the screen.
Everything in the thread, including text and images, will disappear after viewing. Any aspect of one-on-one conversations can allow you to save something by constantly maintaining it, but because it will stay on the screen you will see that happen.
