Sony’s new DualSense controllers offer more than just your standard noise. Activation buttons can have different levels of resistance, depending on the factors within the game, such as which weapon you’re using, so you can really feel it when you’re using a hair-firing gun, rather than a heavier pull of a large rifle.
The haptic feedback system makes it really three-dimensional to know where that feedback is coming from. Instead of two roaring motors in the palm of your hand, the motors in the DualSense controller can vibrate across the controller. When it works, it’s amazing. For example, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla it looks great on both consoles, but with the DualSense controller, the puller pull is different for each type of bow, so you can feel the added extra tension of your big-predator bow or the quick touch of a light bow feather. . You feel that these weapons are different and that they are different in the hands of your character. Few games take advantage of DualSense’s new bells and whistles, but it’s fun when they do.
Services are expensive and essential
Both consoles have plenty of subscriptions to play online games, and the other has access to a library of games to play “for free”. It has the Xbox Series X. Xbox Live Gold and Game Ultimate Pass, and the PS5 has PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now.
Game Ultimate Pass is the best. It gives you access to online multiplayer and has a wonderful catalog of 100 games that you can download to your console and often to your computer. You can install the Xbox app to play with a laptop or desktop and many of them are easy to download.
Playstation plus It offers some “free” games that you can download every month and is required to play online. Then there is PS Now, Like the Xbox Game Pass but which focuses on older PS4, PS3 and PS2 games. Playing online allows you to access an in-depth catalog of 800 and older PlayStation games.
These subscription plans are very confusing. Why is that? At this point, no one knows.
Winner: Everyone and Nobody
So which console is the winner here? Not even. Because it doesn’t matter how good your console is if no one can buy it. The PlayStation 5 is a better console, and since more of them are selling, your friends are likely to have one or get one, but I wouldn’t consider the game a winner.
DualSense is great, but inside, the two consoles are pretty much the same, and it shows. It’s like Sony and Microsoft bought the same Honda Civic, but Sony installed a market steering wheel that looks nice. Sure it’s nice, but is it really much better? Or both are sort of moderate aggression?
