Depending on who you ask (and where) SaGa Frontier The JRPG is a popular cult classic or the best-selling of a famous franchise. It’s engaging, it’s complex, it’s repetitive. It has now been remastered, 24 years after its original release.
“We want to play SaGa series games with a long history in Japan, especially Western ones,” says Hiroyuki Miura, SaGa Frontier Remastered.
I played SaGa Frontier He was a clumsy and angry teenager in the late 90s. I spent hours raising my characters level, then getting angry with myself for not saving it before cleaning it again. I would take steps to switch to the family computer, looking for game tips and detailed itineraries in the old school forums. My passion for the game grew when a friend of mine didn’t know about it. It was my game.
As the years went by, I regularly returned to the world SaGa Frontier. I took my empty PlayStation to college and bought a third copy of the game from eBay (since I ripped my original copy to hell, I accidentally broke the second one). The game brought me joy, but I was worried about the precariousness of aging technology. If this record were also unusable, how many would be left in the world?
Concerns about limited availability had a significant impact on the SaGa team. “We have received a lot of requests from players asking them to be able to play these games again. We think it is important to meet those requests,” says Miura. “These plans can only be implemented if there is a demand from players, so we are very grateful to be able to release this game worldwide this time around.”
Before the readjustment, the fans made peace because some parts of the game would always be unfinished. The series creator didn’t share the same likes. “This was an opportunity created by us,” says Akitoshi Kawazu, CEO of SaGa. “A little less than 10 years ago, producer Ichikawa and I worked on various initiatives to restart the SaGa series. I am very pleased that we were able to reach this stage as a result of this work.”
SaGa Frontier Remastered includes a major graphics upgrade, as well as pre-cut content and QoL adjustments – amazing updates for SaGa fans. But SFR is still being punished as it could be a classic JRPG. Didn’t you bring the right characters to the right room to spark the right conversation in the first fifteen minutes of the game? Well, then you will never receive a secret character three hours later.
The architecture of the arcade game is distinctive of Kawazu, as he pushes the boundaries of storytelling and behavior to original levels, which are sometimes incomprehensible. And it’s in the name: SaGa Frontier it was a territory of games that was literally unknown, with free-roaming regions, level-scaling monsters, and combined attack systems. But again, all parts of the game can’t be tried, it’s the sense that you’re missing something.
You can create tough combinations by playing with your characters, but the rules that govern these combinations are not explained in the game. This way SFR can be bright and fun at the same time while being an absolutely amazing experience.
While the mechanics can be amazing, the visual and auditory measurements are fascinating. Running through the village involves a small sprite sprinting on a painted background. The settings range from the neon grime of Koorong to the quaint Devin of Wonderland and the gothic pink glow of Facinaturu. Each region has a unique musical theme by the famous composer Kenji Ito, lo-fi beats are constantly glimpsed like a pixelated painting by Escher. (Another benefit of readjustment is that you can listen to the media library soundtrack from the main menu.)
The combat system is also striking. If you throw the enemy into the air due to the Rising Nova attack, your point of view will change with the movement of the sprite. The approach is organic, as if you are an active participant in a real fight. This technique helped the game to age and added visual complexity that is very fun to watch.
