Uruguay have named Diego Alonso as their head coach

Former Inter Miami and Monterrey coach Diego Alonso has been named Uruguay’s new coach, the country’s football association said on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old replaces Oscar Tabarez, who was released from work last month for 15 years.

Tabarez’s departure came after a mediocre result, and the two-time World Cup winner finished seventh in the South American Qatar 2022 qualifying team.

The top four will automatically qualify for the finals and the fifth-place finisher will enter an inter-regional qualifier.

Alonso has extensive experience at club level, having coached Penarol and Bella Vista in his hometown of Uruguay, as well as Paraguay’s Olimpia and Guarani.

Pachucan had the longest coaching period for the Mexican team, which he led to the 2016 Mexican championship. He also won the CONCACAF Champions League with Pachuca and Monterrey.

The Uruguayan Football Association has not given details of his contract, but local media have said that Alonso has signed an agreement at least until the end of the South American qualifiers.

Uruguay is one point behind the top four, with its last four qualifiers at home to Venezuela and Peru, and away from Paraguay and Chile.
