Guatemalan prison: several prisoners killed in gang violence Crime News

Hundreds of police have been deployed to restore order in Cantel prison, killing at least seven inmates.

According to officials, at least seven prisoners have been killed, most of them beheaded, in clashes between rival gangs in western Guatemala prisons.

Hundreds of police have been deployed after Wednesday’s violence, which includes prisoners from the Mara Salvatrucha gang and prisoners from Barrio 18 who are sworn enemies of Barrio 18 in Cantel Prison.

“Previously, the deaths of seven prisoners are known,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement, describing the situation as an “incident”.

The number was confirmed by the prosecution, and the workers managed to gain access to a prison 205 kilometers west of the capital.

National Civil Police (PNC) spokesman Jorge Aguilar earlier told the AFP news agency that the clashes between the two gangs had resulted in violence, and that at least six prisoners had been cut off.

Authorities suspect that one of the gangs attacked the other because of the incident that happened a few days ago, Aguilar added.

Gang violence and riots are common in Cantel prison, where human rights groups have condemned his harsh conditions.

It was built to accommodate five hundred inmates and now lives four times that number, police said.

Guatemalan fear and violence the gangs are known for extortion rackets, forcing employers and bus operators to pay protection money or pay for execution.

The gangs are responsible for nearly half of the 3,500 violent deaths in Guatemala, authorities say it has one of the highest violent death rates in the world.
