Five people were killed and more than 40 were injured Sunday in a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, during a Christmas parade, and dozens of people were killed, including young people shaking pompoms and a group of “Dancing Grannies.”

“At the moment, we can confirm that five people are dead and more than 40 are injured,” the Waukesha Police Department said on its Facebook page. “However, these numbers may change when we gather additional information.”

Waukesha police chief Dan Thompson earlier told reporters that an interested person had been arrested and a vehicle was recovered when it happened in a town 32 miles (20 miles) west of Milwaukee.

It was not known whether the incident was intentional, but there was no further risk and the shelter order earlier in the town of about 72,000 was lifted, Thompson said.

Thompson said an agent fired shots at the vehicle in an attempt to stop the massacre. Another video appeared on social media showing police firing at the vehicle as it collided with street fences. Police did not believe the vehicle was shot, Thompson added, contrary to previous reports.

President Joe Biden was informed of the incident by his aides, a White House official said.

“The White House is closely following the situation in Waukesha and our hearts are on everyone who has been affected by this horrific incident. We have contacted state and local authorities to provide the necessary assistance and assistance.”
