Duke Ragan has a chance to end the gold medal in men’s Olympic boxing with drought, as he fought Albert Batyrgaziev of the Russian Olympic Committee since 2004 in the early hours of Thursday morning. Ragan has had the opportunity to be the first American man to win gold in boxing since Andre Ward became a world champion at the 2004 World Championships in Athens, Greece.
Ragan turned professional a year ago this month, battling under the Top Rank band, with a 4-0 playoff. In the early lap of the 32nd minute, he struggled to face Frenchman Samuel Kistohurry in an ugly fight before making a 3: 2 decision. Ragan was able to overtake Kazakhstan’s Serik Temirzhanov and knocked out Irishman Kurt Walker in a hard-fought battle for promotion to the medals.
