NEW DELHI (Reuters) – At least 15 people have been killed in landslides in two houses in Mumbai, following landslides caused by heavy rains, local officials said on Sunday.
Rescuers were seen using their hands to retrieve the bodies from the ground to be exhumed, local television showed and authorities said more could be trapped inside the debris.
Four of those injured were taken to a nearby hospital, officials said. Rescues carried by local TV channels carried the rescuers who were shown on temporary stretchers using cloth inside narrow paths.
In one of the neighborhoods, half a dozen huts located at the base of a hill collapsed on top of each other, officials said.
After heavy rains over the past 24 hours, several areas of the city were flooded and suburban train services were disrupted, ruining India’s financial capital, where incidents of building collapses in monsoon are more common.
