A Modern Family Cabin in Oklahoman (With Pigs!) – Wired PR Lifestyle Story

John and Bronwyn Spain lives with her son Jess on a 44-acre ranch with two pigs and a dog. They used their passion for history and design to turn a 70-year-old cabin into a modern family home. “John and I have something to do with historic homes, small jobs, doors and windows,” Bronwyn says. Here’s an inside look …

KITCHEN:

Can you tell us the history of the house?
Bronwyn: The original cabin was built in the 1950s. In 2009, when John and I moved in, it was in rough shape. We didn’t know if we wanted to live in the ranch for a long time or if we would end up moving to the city. Until 2013, we decided to build one place of marriage they owned and stayed for a long time.

How did you decide on green for the kitchen?
Bronwyn: I love houses that feel nice, but sometimes it’s hard to fill them with white walls. So this green color helps to warm up the space. We have a lot of wood and orange accents throughout the house and greens and oranges look good together.

How did you want to feel at home?
John: When friends and family come, we want them to feel right at home. We created an open concept in the kitchen / dining room / living room to make it easier for a lot of people to gather. The goal was to get closer to home, not like a museum afraid to touch things.

You have a great dining room. Do you like to entertain?
Bronwyn: Everyday cooking isn’t my favorite, but I like to go on holiday all the time. On Christmas night, we make roast ribs with Yorkshire milk, mashed potatoes, pear and goat cheese salad, devil’s eggs, Brussels sprouts and purple cauliflower. We end up with pecan, pumpkin and sweet purple potatoes – gingerbread biscuits and hot chocolate for the kids!

What are your favorite pieces in the living room?
Bronwyn: My great-grandfather’s old suitcases, between the armchairs. I can imagine all the adventures he had to carry in his suitcases. They also help reduce the bite of the pandemic while I was traveling.

That is very inspiring.
Bronwyn: My grandmother Barb taught me to love the eclectic look. Playful and bizarre pieces also help to remove stiffness. We’ve been living here since we moved to college with Ikea furniture, and over time, we’ve added things to flea markets and thrift stores.

Can you tell us about your dog?
Johnn: It’s hard to hear our 13-year-old rescue dog, so we say it’s Craig, but it’s a set of applause from a specific model he has responded to. He follows us from room to room. When we come back from an outing, it sometimes takes a few minutes to realize we’re home, but when he does he gets excited.

Your bedroom looks very cold.
Bronwyn: I have weird sleep problems and I’ve seen that sleeping in a clean space with no TV or beauty helps me calm down. The plain white bed helps to have a skin touch, and we chose to hang neutral fabrics in favor of paintings or photographs.

How did you think of the bedroom architecture?
John: We went with a vaulted ceiling to make the space a little more dramatic when you came down the hall. What I like most is to gather the shadow of the window in the middle of a summer storm or while it’s snowing. We left the bathroom door outside, so we felt the flow of space was endless.

I love your bathroom!
Bronwyn: We did a play with the claw shoe shower / shower combination you see in historic homes. Our shower is high, and it was impossible to find shower curtains that long, so I ordered the usual cotton curtains from Urban Outfitters. I added chickens to the top of the curtains and voila!

How did you choose the color scheme?
John: The sharp contrast of black and white felt good, especially since the room is connected to our very simple bedroom.

Tell me the pigs!
Bronwyn: Robin Hood and Little John are the BEST girls. Pigs are very intelligent and very naughty. They make us laugh every day – with little noses and eyelashes that look like they’re walking on heels!

What is their schedule like?
John: In the summer, we remove the pigs several times a day because the pigs do not sweat and can easily heat up. I often find them in the mud or trying to freshen up in the baby pool. We usually take them for a walk or in the evening in the yard so we can caress them and give them candy; then we do the night feeding and go to bed around 7:30 pm
