Vincent Kompany says he and his players were abused by fans in a Belgian league match.
Anderlecht coach Vincent Kompany has accused his fans and his players of abusing the race in a Belgian League match over the weekend.
The former Manchester City captain said he had received racist insults in a match against Club Brugge on Sunday and that his players and staff had also been subjected to racist abuse. He said fans in Bruges shouted “black monkey”.
“I’m going home disgusted and disappointed,” Kompany told Eleven Sports TV. “I don’t want to comment on the game. I want to meet my staff, stay with the people I care about. We shouldn’t go through this anymore. ‘
The son of a black father and a white mother, Kompany was often the target of racist abuse during his playing years. He has been involved in the fight against racism in football for 35 years, promoting more diversity within the game.
Anderlecht defender Wesley Hoedt said the abuse was “not part of football”.
“It simply came to our notice then. Of course, we can’t change that much, but we have to come from the Pro League and from the village itself, ”said Hoedt.
Anderlecht sided with the coach’s accusations. The Brussels club said that the coach members had been repeatedly abused during the match and that some players had received racist insults while they were warming up on the sidelines.
“The behavior of some casts a shadow over Belgian football,” Anderlecht said.
Club Bruges made a statement after a 2-2 draw to condemn “any kind of racism”. On Monday, the club said it would work with all relevant authorities to identify the culprits and punish them with a ban on the stadium.
“These people are not representative of the values and rules of our club, and they have no place in the Jan Breydel stadium,” the Belgian champions said.

Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said Kompany’s response was appropriate.
“Let’s hope he and his team recover in peace tonight,” Verlinden wrote on Twitter. “The fight against racism cannot accept any compromise.”
The incident provoked a strong reaction from Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who accused the Belgian League of being calm in a furious scandal on social media.
“I hope you realize that an icon like Vincent Kompany has been insulted for his skin color … That’s enough … Take real action now.” Lukaku wrote on Instagram in defense of the former Belgian national teammate.
The Belgian League agreed with the critics, saying that racism and discrimination have no place in society and in stadiums.
