Rafael Nadal announced on Monday that he had tested positive for COVID-19. It happened when Nadal returned to Spain after competing in the World Tennis Championships in Mubadala in Abu Dhabi a few days ago.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion said he was facing “unpleasant moments” with the virus, but hoped it would be fixed soon.

“I wanted to let you know that when I returned home from the Abu Dhabi tournament, I tested positive for COVID on my PCR test.” Nadal posted it on Twitter.

Nadal also stated that he gave a negative while competing in Abu Dhabi and that he also gave a negative on Friday.

“As a result of the situation, I need to be completely flexible with my schedule and look at my options according to my evolution. I will keep you informed of decisions about future tournaments.”

The Abu Dhabi tournament was Nadal’s first after dealing with a left foot injury. The injury forced the Spanish star to withdraw from the US Open 10 days before the Grand Slam ceremony. Nadal lost the Tokyo Olympics in addition to the U.S. Open.

His situation is now in the air for the Australian Open, which starts on January 17th.
