Arbery’s murder: three accused of US hate crime charges | Black Lives Matter News

Three men have been accused of federal hate crimes that have helped fuel anti-racism protests over the 2020 murder of Ahmaud Arbery.

Three white men in the U.S. state of Georgia have been found not guilty of federal hate crime charges, Ahmaud Arbery, in connection with the death of a black man who was shot while running last year.

Each of the three filed an innocent plea Tuesday in an appearance before federal magistrate Judge Benjamin W Cheesbro in South Brunswick District Court.

Arbery was traveling through a community on the south coast of Georgia outside the city of Brunswick February 2020 when three men, Gregory McMichael, his sons Travis McMichael and neighbors William “Roddie” Bryan, were shot and killed.

The men later told police they believed he was a thief and wanted to arrest the citizens.

But U.S. authorities have complained that Travis McMichael had been there before has sent racist messages, examining the role played by racism in murder and last month by the U.S. Department of Justice hate crime and attempted kidnapping accusations against men.

He welcomed the federal investigation, “because we know it was a great peace of mind for our family [we are close to] to get justice for my son ”.

Civil rights defenders have complained that U.S. authorities are slow to demand justice in the case, with no arrests made within 10 weeks of the incident and after video footage of the shooting posted on social media sparked public outrage.

Arbery’s death prompted a call for justice by another black George Floyd in the weeks leading up to the death of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25 last year.

Chauvin’s beliefs have given hope to activists and politicians who want to see police reform. The sentence is scheduled for June.
