Melinda Snodgrass got the idea for a science fiction novel High Land when he began to think how horrible human beings can be.
“I had a sudden view of this nine-foot-tall ant-like alien creature with its jaws and claws – just a horrible, horrible creature,” says Snodgrass in section 370. Guide to the Geek Galaxy podcast. “And a little man was holding a machine gun in great fear. And I had to think about humanity and the tendency to be evil monsters, evil monsters ”.
The novel takes place in a universe dominated by five alien species by a human empire called the Sun League, who now live as wizards and secondary citizens. Snodgrass thinks it’s a pretty compelling first-contact scenario.
“If we invent a record that is faster than light, and if we go out into the universe and meet other aliens, I’m sure the first thing we’re going to do is throw away the holy grail,” he says. “So instead of us fighting aliens who are always invaders, we are are foreign invaders “.
Moreover, he believes that the moral progress made by men is much poorer than people realize, and that women’s rights would quickly disappear if it became a priority to have children, as is the case in the Solar League. “When you go out into space and colonize the planets, you end up on a planet that is not a gold block (a world very much like Earth), where there is a harsh environment, the thing that becomes a precious commodity is your ability to sustain the population,” he says. “So in the years that followed, women moved on to a much more traditional role.”
All this creates a great deal of conflict for the character of Mercedes de Arango, one of the first women to participate in the elite military academy of the Solar League. It’s a situation that could be related to Snodgrass, as she was once the only female lawyer in her law firm.
“I literally had a bunch of male lawyers running down that big office building, and I could hear them saying, ‘We heard Charlie hired himself a girl. Where’s the girl?'” Says Snodgrass. “And they all came and looked at my office. I was like a creature in a zoo. It was very strange. “
