Most of the victims of the fire were children staying at facilities in Henan province.

The fire broke out Friday at a martial arts training center in China, killing 18 people and most of the victims.

The fire broke out at 3am (7pm GMT Thursday) and was later extinguished, the Zhecheng County government in Henech province reported on its website.

It was unclear what caused the fire, and 16 people were injured, four of whom were in critical condition, the provincial government said.

Police arrested the head of the center. He did not identify the person or training facility.

Most of the dead were students between the ages of seven and 16 who were on the second floor of the center, the Beijing Youth Daily reported, although it was later removed from the newspaper’s website.

In the worst fires in China, on Christmas Day 2000, a nightclub in Luoyang City also killed 309 people in Luoyang City. Most of the victims drowned in a smoke-filled nightclub, which had only two emergency exits, and no sprinklers or smoke alarms.
