The government has denounced the “cowardly and barbaric attack” that killed 19 gendarmes and civilians.

At least 19 gendarmes and civilians have been killed by gunmen in northern Burkina Faso, a three-border region where the country has been fighting armed groups for years.

Security Minister Maxime Kone told state media on Sunday that the toll for the attack on a military police force near a gold mine in Inata was temporary.

“A gendarmerie detachment this morning has been subjected to a cowardly and barbaric attack. They maintained their position, ”Kone said, adding that 22 survived.

There was a fear that the death toll could rise.

No responsibility was claimed for the immediate attack, one of the deadliest against defense and security forces since the Burkina Faso conflict took over in 2015.

It came two days after another attack killed seven policemen in the area around Niger and Mali.

Attacks by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIL) have continued to escalate in the three-border area, despite efforts by thousands of United Nations, regional and Western troops and some governments to negotiate with the fighters.
