Australian batsman Marcus Harris will open with David Warner in the Ashes series against England, selectors chairman George Bailey has said.

Harris, along with Queensland captain Usman Khawaja, was one of the forerunners of the role, with Will Pucovsky likely to miss the first Test while battling concussion symptoms.

Bailey praised 29-year-old Harris, who scored a century for Victoria against New South Wales at the start of the Sheffield Shield season. “Harry had limited options in the past and he’s been in and out for a while, so we wouldn’t like him, hopefully, to have a chance to get a long race,” Bailey said. “What we liked is its consistency. He has been a very good scorer here, but we love that he has gone abroad and that he also had a great year for Leicester (County Leicestershire). ”

Bailey said the 5th place in the Australian bats was also at stake. “That No. 5 spot is open, but we’re starting to get pretty close there,” he said.

The Five-Test Ashes will begin on December 8 in Brisbane. Australia kept the Ashes as the team last met in England in 2019 after a 2-2 draw.
