CHENNAI / COLOMBO (Reuters) – Heavy rains have killed at least 41 people in southern India and Sri Lanka, authorities said on Thursday, with weather forecasters expected to ease the rains in the coming days as affected communities flooded.
The Indian Department of Meteorology has forecast little or moderate rainfall in most of the affected areas, and occasional flooding on some roads and low areas.
Members of neighboring Sri Lanka said it was expected to ease the rain from Thursday as the low pressure that led to bad weather was removed.
“The worst is over and there will be occasional rains,” said Pradeep John, an amateur advertiser with a strong following in Tamil Nadu, India’s worst-hit state.
“The rains will continue and continue today, with major disruptions and nothing to worry about.”
The rains have killed 25 people in the Sri Lankan island nation, most of them drowned, and landslides have injured five, authorities said.
Sixteen people have been killed in Tamil Nadun, the KKSSR Ramachandran state disaster management minister said at a news conference.
Many places in the state capital of Chennai, India’s car manufacturing center, were filled with water and government officials used pumps to empty some communities that had entered the waist.
Thousands of people were taken to safety in low-lying areas, authorities said.
Many schools and universities in Tamil Nadu remained closed while some train services were still suspended.
The monsoon in northeastern India is frequent from October to December, and it rains heavily, especially in the south.
