Over the years, the players they swore up and down Discord—No Slack— is the best desktop chat app. But as with any great thing, there is room for improvement. Type BetterDiscord.

The experience is reminiscent of an earlier internet era, when Winamp skins in the style of black and green terminals became popular and everything downloaded online was customizable — officially or not. BetterDiscord is not an officially sanctioned app; and is likely to violate Discord’s terms of service, which prohibits you from modifying Discord. But the software has been installed more than 5.3 million times since 2015, and its developers say they haven’t seen any action taken against Discord users for changing the customer.
BetterDiscord is the work of a loose group of volunteer developers, led by a 27-year-old firmware engineer named Zack Rauen. The project began in 2015 just a few months after the launch of Discord. Initially, BetterDiscord was fixing small holes in the chat app and adding new features like searches. Rauen said that when he started the project in 2016, he started making a plugin that allowed users with different “roles” on a server to choose different colors for names and texts. He later coded Discord’s ability to not meet the minimum window size and remove annoying buttons he had never used.
Since then, the project has expanded. And while Discord has been officially integrated into some features that were only available through BetterDiscord, BetterDiscord is still a step further. Dozens of users have submitted covers and plugins, such as specifying who has “reacted” to a message, specifying how many people are online, displaying the number of server members, or blurring NSFW messages. BetterDiscord’s top three plugins have been downloaded more than 100,000 times each from their website. Among the most trafficked: another that is added to a Spotify control panel, another that shows how long you’ve been on a voice call, and a third that shows all the hidden channels on a server.
“We’ve seen new users come in because they like the visual customization of themes, and we’ve seen them like the functional changes that plugins can provide,” says Rauen. With so much content being sent to users, he and others do hand-made security reviews of what comes next, looking for harmful code. They also plan to launch an app store for BetterDiscord sometime this year, allowing users to browse, download and install add-ons from within the Discord window.
Such features can be especially useful for new Discord users — and there are some a lot more than they were just a year or two ago. Originally an edgelord group chat platform for gamers, Discord had a big trend for 2020, when they were looking for ways to connect very, very, not very lines. People use the chat app to watch movies along with the screen-sharing feature, share memes (without logging in to Facebook), and even give college courses. Last summer Discord launched a brand for “players” and took on a new motto: “Your place to talk”. This year, he added a Clubhouse-like feature Called “Stages”. It currently has more than 300 million users, and interests go beyond video games, including knitting, metal music, board games, beloved YouTubers, and more.
More and more discord “something for everyone, ”BetterDiscord exudes the spirit of the earlier internet era by helping Discord users express themselves without the limitations of what a company thinks is best.
