NEW YORK (Reuters) – Alvin Bragg, a former federal prosecutor and civil rights lawyer, is likely to become the next attorney in Manhattan’s district after Tali Farhadian’s main rival for Democratic Weinstein’s candidacy was approved on Friday.

Bragg, 47, would be the first black man to head one of the country’s top prosecutors, bringing out the headlines this week with a horrific indictment of former US President Donald Trump’s company of the same name and his longtime chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg.

Bragg won 34% of the vote for registered Democrats in the June 22 primary, while former federal prosecutor Farhadian Weinstein was in second place at 30%, and the remaining thousands of votes have yet to be calculated. Six other candidates were left behind.

“We are one step closer to making history and transforming the courthouse office to provide security and justice for all,” Bragg said in a statement, swearing that police had stopped growing up in New York several times and would end it. racial differences in prosecution.

Given Manhattan’s democratic leanings, Bragg is almost certain that Republican Thomas Kenniff, a former Westchester County prosecutor and an Iraq war veteran will dominate the November general election.

The winner of the race will be the heir to the office’s criminal investigation into Trump’s business empire, which began retiring in 2018 from Cyrus Vance Jr.

Farhadian Weinstein said in a statement on Friday that he was accepting it after concluding that he would finish second after counting all the votes.

“I spoke to Alvin Bragg earlier today and congratulated him on his election as the first black district attorney in Manhattan for the historic election,” his statement says.
