The American and Islamic Relations Council is urging Hilton hotels to cancel plans to build a hotel on the site of the mosque.
The American-Islamic Relations Council (CAIR) is urging Hilton Worldwide Holdings to cancel plans to build a hotel in the Xinjiang region of China on the site where Chinese officials demolished and desecrated a mosque.
“It is unbelievable that a corporation would do business in the same location as an ongoing genocide,” CAIR Deputy National Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell told Al Jazeera.
The United Nations and the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden have accused China of committing genocide against Uighur Muslims.
A recently The Amnesty International report called the situation on the ground in Xinjiang a “hell landscape” and explained that minority groups were forced to abandon their religious traditions, language and culture.
“We never say it again,” but we never mean it. Hilton can build a hotel and be complicit in the genocide, or he can help cancel the hotel and stop a genocide, ”Mitchell said.
China plans to build a new shopping center that includes a Hilton hotel on a plot of land that was once a mosque, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported on Sunday.
Virginia’s Hilton Worldwide Holdings did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.
In the report called “‘As if we were enemies in a war’: Muslim incarceration in China, torture and persecution of Muslims in Xinjiang”, Amnesty International identified human rights violations against Uyghurs.
According to the amnesty, hundreds of thousands of Muslim men and women have been sent to prisons or detention camps where they have been subjected to “physical and psychological torture” and China has been subjected to systemic mass surveillance of Muslims so that they may be “best examined.” population in the world ”.
Ethnic Muslims are forced to abandon their religious traditions, cultural practices and local languages, according to Amnesty International, which also shared the testimony of 50 former detainees in the camp.
“Chinese authorities have created a dystopian landscape of hell in Xinjiang. Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities face crimes against humanity and serious violations of other human rights,” Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnes Callamard said in a statement.
China has denied any abuse of its Muslim minority.
CAIR, the largest U.S. civil rights and Muslim rights organization, has praised Biden’s tougher stance on human rights violations in the Xinjiang region of China.
In April, Biden Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned China for committing acts of genocide and human rights violations against Uighur Muslims in China. He also asked U.S. corporations to refuse to do business in the region.
“Hilton is in the United States, but he seems to be ignoring the fact that the U.S. government has acknowledged that China has committed genocide against Uighur Muslims and other Turkish minorities,” Robert J McCaw, CAIR’s director of government affairs, told Al Jazeera.
The Biden administration also raised the issue of human rights in talks with other leaders in the world last week in the Group of Seven (G7) in China. Mitchell said companies also have an important role to play in taking a stand.
“China is a superpower – and no one is going to go to war for human rights,” Mitchell said. “The only people who can do anything about it are the United States and major corporations. Corporations have a big role to play in stopping this genocide.”
