US sends 2.5 million COVID vaccines to Taiwan Coronavirus pandemic News

The shipment more than tripled with the allocation of shots from Washington Island, amid US-China tensions.

The United States has announced that 2.5 million doses of COVID vaccine were on their way to Taiwan, more than tripling Washington’s allocation of previous island shootings, as political and military pressure from China has intensified.

Washington, through so-called “vaccine diplomacy,” competed to deepen geopolitical policy, initially promised to deliver 750,000 doses to Taiwan, but that number increased when the administration of President Joe Biden advanced its commitment to send 80 million U.S. shots worldwide. .

China expressed outrage earlier this month when U.S. senators visited Taiwan and reported the vaccination between tensions between Washington and Beijing.

“Wheels up! Giving a dose of 2.5 million vaccines is on its way to Taiwan, ”State Department spokesman Ned Price wrote on Saturday.

When China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, it has repeatedly offered to send coronavirus vaccines to the island as it struggles with the peak of domestic infections. Taipei has appeared concerned about the safety of Chinese shootings.

Beijing has exerted economic, military and diplomatic pressure in recent years on Taiwan and is outside of international organizations such as the World Health Organization.

Washington remains Taiwan’s biggest ally, but does not maintain full diplomatic relations with Taipei because it is officially recognized by Beijing.

Until recently, Taiwan received praise for its treatment of the pandemic, and recorded a few deaths.

But the case has risen since the appearance began with the airline’s pilots.

“Thank you #EU for this touching gesture of friendship. These vaccines will go a long way in keeping # Taiwan safe and healthy, ”Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen wrote on Twitter.
