Canada reports steady growth in COVID-19 cases, Omicron sees rapid spread

OTTAWA (Reuters) – COVID-19 cases in Canada have started to grow again and health trends could rise as well, health officials said on Friday, adding that the new Omicron variant of coronavirus had the potential to spread very quickly.
“During the winter months, the health system is strained in many areas … a great deal of caution is needed to reduce its spread and impact, especially during the coming holiday season,” Medical Director Theresa Tam told reporters.
Canada has reported 87 cases of Omicron so far, all of which are asymptomatic or mild. Most of the initial cases were detected in recent international travelers or their close relationships.
Tam said the variant had the potential to spread much faster than the Delta variant, which is highly transmissible.
“The trend in the number of daily average cases has shifted from a gradual but steady rise to a steady rise,” he said. “As new day-to-day cases grow, there is concern that trends in national anguish may begin to grow again.”
