Canada to Indigenous Women: ‘Our Systems Have Failed You’ | Indigenous Rights News

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promises resources to tackle violence against indigenous women, but some want specific action.

The Canadian government on Thursday said it would focus more resources on the First Nations police and justice system and focus systemic racism on law enforcement to combat violence against indigenous women, but did not give it time to achieve a “transformative framework”.

The government promised to give indigenous communities greater control over certain social services and improve access to health care. Her plan comes two years after the report on the deaths of 1,000 indigenous women and girls in recent decades called it a national genocide.

The government has said it will address systemic racism among the Mounted Police Kings of Canada, the national law enforcement agency responsible for controlling many of the country’s rural areas, through improved recruitment and training.

“The plans are great, but what we need is action,” said Denise Pictou-Maloney, president of the National Circle of Family and Survivors, who served as a consultant on the plan. He said he would like some accountability mechanism to carry out some changes and actions within a year.

It came out as a plan discovery The remains of 215 children from a former residential school were shocked and reminded the nation of abuses against indigenous peoples.

The Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission determined in 2015 that Canada is committed to “cultural genocide”Forcing more than 150,000 Indigenous children to attend residential schools across the country between the 1870s and 1990s.

The residential school system sought to embrace Indigenous children in Canadian society and eradicate what state officials at the time described as an “Indian problem”; the children were forcibly separated from their parents and siblings, beaten for speaking their indigenous languages, and subjected to malnutrition, physical violence, forced labor, and sexual abuse.

On Thursday, the Canadian government also ordered immediate measures to combat indigenous racism in the health system. The need for such action was underscored this week by Joyce Echaquan, a 37-year-old indigenous mother of seven children who died at a Quebec hospital after being ridiculed by staff and forgotten by polls.

“Your voice has made it clear how our systems have failed you,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at Thursday’s ceremony.

The government said it would provide progress on the annual situation, but did not have time to achieve its goals. The federal government’s 2021 budget included $ 1.8 billion (Canadian $ 2.2 billion) over five years to promote non-racist health systems and improve access to indigenous justice, among other things.

Lynne Groulx, director general of the Canadian Women’s Women’s Association, said the ad is not accurate enough.

“It’s a plan to have a plan for the future.”
