The military and authorities have said before that they have defeated the rebel group FACT only for fighting to continue.

The rebel group Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) did not respond to a request for comment on the military’s claim on Sunday. Transitional military authorities have previously said they have defeated the rebels solely because of the struggle to continue.
Struggles and political instability are being seen more widely. Chad is a key power in central Africa and a longtime ally of the West against rebels fighting rebels across the Sahel region.
The crowd in the capital N’Djamena cheered on Sunday as soldiers returned from the front line in a column of tanks and armored vehicles.
“The return of the army to the barracks today heralds the end of operations and the victory of Chad,” Abakar Abdelkerim Daoud, the army’s chief of staff, told reporters.
At an army base in N’Djamena, dozens of captured rebels were sitting on the ground, visible to the assembled press.
FACT fighters have been crossing the border from Libya since April to oppose Deby, who has been in power for 30 years. Subsequent deaths while visiting troops plunged the country into crisis.
On Saturday, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the protest against the ruling military council. Led by Deby’s son Mahamat Idriss Itno, the council took power after his first death, promising to oversee the 18-month transition to elections.
Opposition politicians and civil society have denounced the coup and called for supporters to take to the streets. At least five people were killed during the protest on April 27th.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed strong military support when he attended Deby’s funeral, sitting next to Deby’s son Mahamat. But the French government has changed, and has demanded a civilian government of national unity.
People staged another protest on Sunday, but delayed it for fear that the authorities intended to violently oppress them, Mahamat Nour Ibedou, a prominent human rights activist, told Reuters.
The military council approved the protest on Sunday.
