The rover was taken to Mars on an unmanned Tianwen-1 spacecraft on Saturday, the year the first successful probe to land in the first mission any country has ever made to the planet.

The Chinese National Space Administration on Wednesday released images taken by the cameras attached to the vehicle, showing equipment to prevent obstacles in the vehicle and solar panels, as well as the texture of the planet’s surface.

“People on the internet, the images of Mars that you’re looking forward to are here,” the space agency said in a social media post that shares the images.

Zhurong, the name of China’s legendary fire god, came a few months after the last U.S. probe to Mars – Personality – and is celebrated in China as a milestone in the rise of the space superpower state.

The plan is expected to take about three months to take photos and collect geographic data.

China has come a long way in the race to connect with the US and Russia, as astronauts and cosmonauts have decades of experience in space exploration.

It has launched successfully the first module of the new space station in the last month.
