CLLA leads startups that focus on DNA testing and AI-protected care for the elderly – Wired PR Lifestyle Story

With the growing need for digital transformation, his team identified the aforementioned sectors as one of the leading industries in the process of rapid digital transformation and adoption.

To highlight some startups with such solutions in the 16th CLLA Cohort, we talked Supagene.Asia and Guardians AI in the field of smart health care.

For available DNA tests

DNA testing gives us greater clarity and insight into our body and health, enabling us to anticipate future problems and take swift preventative measures.

Launched in 2019, Supagene.Asia aims to bridge the gap between personalized health and wellness with its DNA testing kits.

With other competitors already in the market, however, Supagene.Asia believes it can stand out with more accurate results and a program of action.

“One of the most important things for consumers to know before testing their DNA is to know what DNA data set the test company is using,” co-founder Nura Samsuddin told Vulcan Post.

“At Supagene.Asia, we are focusing on DNA population data sets that provide more accurate results to our clients in the Malaysian and Southeast Asian regions.”

In addition, the startup offers a comprehensive program of post-test activities and provides its clients with practical and tailored solutions with the help of partner healthcare professionals.

Based on a brief study of the possibilities for DNA testing in Malaysia, the Supagene.Asia kit also seems to be one of the cheapest for RM1,499 (RM749.50 per kit).

Normally, you would expect to pay at least RM1,000 for a single kit, as well as Malaysian DNA testing companies.

So far, Nura has reported that Supagene.Asia’s solutions market has been promising, especially for B2B customers to serve B2B customers through partners like KL Sky Clinic, MedKad and so on.

But being a business created by people related to science, Nura acknowledged that marketing and consumer advertising was one of their biggest challenges.

When they brought this issue to CLLA, they strategically connected with the experts and then helped them with their brand positioning and market direction.

Through CLLA, Supagene.Asia has been able to network with government agencies such as MIDA, MDEC and TERAJU to attract investment.

AI-sponsored care for the elderly

In the area of ​​care for the elderly, Guardians AI was launched in January 2021.

“The impetus for the launch was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, [whereby] Many private sector nurses and caregivers have entered the public sector, ”said Dr. Goh, founder and managing director of Guardians AI.

This added to the gap in private health care, particularly in the unprofitable elderly care sector, he added. Retirement home operators were severely understaffed, and many caregivers were tired of overwork.

More mistakes began to occur, such as the fall of the elderly unnoticed at night until the morning. And it was not only the elderly who were harmed, they were then blamed for the exhausted caregivers, leading to low morale and even depression.

Emphasizing the need for fall control solutions, Dr. Goh and his team began work. They came up with a solution that removes the burden of ongoing monitoring and informs caregivers of any incidents involving the elderly.

Using a combination of sensors and trained AI algorithms, the device is placed on the ceiling to monitor the following situations from the top down: bed exits, falls, and when the patient is cared for by a caregiver.

According to pre-established parameters for a weak and mobile elderly person with dementia, the accuracy of the system is estimated to be close to 98%.

According to Dr. Goh, the Guardians AI solution is more foolproof than clothing for the elderly, as smart watches and the like are expensive, prone to loss, require frequent recharging, and so on.

Current customers are nursing homes and the elderly who receive care in their homes. So far, Dr. Goh has said the response has been “cautiously positive.”

“Because ‘caution’ is a very innovative solution in the market and many are unaware of its use, and ‘positive’, because most of our customers are very intrigued by this solution and hope that the situation will change one day. The better.”

Once the team has sufficient evidence of its system’s ability to prevent falls, it will focus on the hospital market.

For Dr. Goh, one of his biggest challenges in running the startup has been uncertainty and money, which can have a huge impact on one’s psyche. But thanks to his circle of solidarity, he was able to move forward.

One of those support systems was CLLA and its experienced tutors, who reinvigorated Dr. Goh with new optimism, plans, and perspectives.

The Guardians AI said it has toured the CLLA at least three times in terms of its revenue model, business plan and operations.
