The decision was announced on Saturday when India lost a 1-2 test series in South Africa.
“At some point everything has to stop and for me as the Test Captain of India, now it’s … I’ve always believed that I give my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do,” he said. The Indian cricket board, BCCI, thanked Kohli for his “admirable leadership qualities that took his test team to unprecedented heights”.
Kohli, 33, left Twenty20 as captain in September and was replaced as one-day International (ODI) skipper in December, and took on the opener Rohit Sharma in both formats.
One of the highlights of his captaincy was India’s first win of the 2018-19 Australian Test series in Australia, and he led the country to the final of the World Cup in England last year, losing to New Zealand.
The announcement comes shortly after India plunged into controversy on the field following a decision that was canceled in the failure of South Africa’s third test.
Kohli and two teammates were caught complaining into the microphone after home captain Dean Elgar survived the review after stepping on his leg before a wicket at a crucial stage in the third afternoon.
Judge Andy Pycroft and the International Cricket Council have yet to say whether they will take disciplinary action against Kohli, KL Rahul and R Ashwin for their role in the incident.
Kohli is part of the ODI team when Rahul, who leads Rahul, is injured and will play three matches in South Africa from 19 January.
