More than 700 people have been killed in more than 700 homes in western Badghis province after a 5.3 magnitude earthquake.
At least 26 people have been killed in an earthquake in western Afghanistan, an official said.
The victims were killed Monday when the roofs of their homes collapsed in the Qadis district of western Badghis province, Baz Mohammad Sarwary, a provincial spokesman, told news agencies.

The quake also affected residents of Muqr district in the province, but details, including the victims, are not yet available, he said.
Sarwary said the tremors were felt throughout the province. Some homes in Qala-e-Naw, the provincial capital, were cracked but not injured or badly damaged, he added.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the quake was at a depth of 30 kilometers (18.64 miles).
