DR Congo’s Nyiragon volcano erupted and caused panic in Environmental News

Electricity has been cut off in the city of Goma as some residents leave their homes and head for the border around Rwanda.
Mount Nyiragon in eastern eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, has erupted, sending terror terrorists from the nearby city of Goma, even though a volcanologist seems to be in no danger to the city.
The city cut off electricity and some residents began to leave their homes on Saturday on the border around Rwanda.
The military governor of North Kivu province, the capital of Goma, “confirmed the eruption of the Nyiragon volcano … around 19:00 [17:00 GMT]”.
“Investigations are underway and people need to continue under the guidance of civil protection,” General Constant Ndima said, calling for “calm”.
Residents smelled of sulfur on the streets of the eastern village, on the southern slope of the mountain and on the northern shore of Lake Kivu.
Dario Tedesco, a volcanologist in the city of nearly two million lakes, told Reuters that Goma was not in danger and that the lava seemed to be heading east – in the direction of the Rwandan border. He said earlier that he thought the lava could hit Goma, but later said it wasn’t.
“I see big sources of lava,” Tedesco told Reuters.

Translation: “The government says it is monitoring the situation in Goma, especially the activity of the Nyiragon volcano. According to Patrick Muyaya [a Congolese politician]“Local authorities are assessing the situation with the Goma Volcanological Observatory, detailed communication will be followed,” journalist Stanis Bujakera wrote on Twitter.
It last erupted in Nyiragon in 2002, killing 250 people and leaving 120,000 people homeless after the lava spilled into Gomara.
Volcano observers are concerned that the volcanic activity seen in Nyiragon in the last five years is reflected in the years before 1977 and 2002 before the eruptions.
Volcanologists at the Nyiragon-controlled Rubber Volcano Observatory (OVG) have been trying to make basic checks since the World Bank cut funding among revenue allegations.
