Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lunkonde says seismic activity has calmed in eastern DR Congo.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo will begin the return phase of residents who fled Goma volcanic eruption which destroyed thousands of homes and the government threatened to flood the city.

Less than a week after the eruption of May 22, which stopped near the city limits, about 400,000 people to leave confused when the government warned that underground tremors could cause a new eruption or cause the release of toxic gases.

The tremors have subsided and many people have returned to Gomara. The city is located on the shores of Lake Kivu, about 12 km from Mount Nyiragon (the most active volcano in Africa).

“Today, we have decided on the progressive return of the displaced according to the plan that will be given by the military governor,” Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lunkonde said at a press conference in Goma on Monday.

“Compared to two weeks ago, the situation has improved in terms of seismic activity. Now we are able to contemplate the future with less concern, ”he added.

Lukond told reporters that the Goma suburbs destroyed by the eruption could not be inhabited.

“We need to learn from the eruptions of 2002 and 2021 so that our populations are no longer so close to danger,” he said.

There are about 245,000 displaced people in the surrounding villages and towns, according to a recent survey by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The government said it will provide buses and trucks from Tuesday to help people return.

Mount Nyiragon, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, last exploded in 2002, killing more than 200 people and sending lava through Goma. Last month’s eruption killed at least 31 people.

In the deadliest eruption of Nyiragongo in 1977, more than 600 people were killed.

On Saturday, the government reopened Goma Airport, the main aid center in the DRC-breached eastern conflict region.

People left homeless as a result of the eruption would be temporarily rehoused and given help with reconstruction, the government said in a statement.
