Welcome to the highlights of the T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 match between England and Australia. This was Santadeep Dey, bringing you all the action as it unfolded at the Dubai International Stadium.
ENG vs AUS HIGHLIGHTS
CHRIS JORDAN HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH “Great bowling effort from the boys; trying to keep it simple, going with the rhythm of the game, holding our length, being nice and straight. The way the boys batted was unbelievable. I backed my yorkers.” |
ENGLAND INNINGS
ENG 126/2 in 11.4 overs: Four, down third man: An outside edge off Bairstow’s willow spins past Wade, followed by Finch at slip.
England completes a thumping victory with 50 balls to spare! This is AUS’ biggest defeat while defending a target in T20Is. England now leads Group 1 with six points and a very healthy NRR of +3.95. Have all but made the semis, you may add.
ENG 119/2 in 11 overs: Buttler greets Zampa with a monstrous six. Bairstow joins the party as well. The hard bottom hand comes into play as the ball disappears into the upper tiers at long-on. The Aussies are being pummeled into submission. Another six!
ENG 99/2 in 10 overs: Flatter delivery from Agar and gone! Malan gets an edge and Wade has pouched it comfortably to breathe some life into the Aussie unit. Bairstow joins Buttler. Time for a drinks break.
ENG 97/1 in 9 overs: Zampa returns. Buttler is making a mockery of the Australia bowlers now. Charges down to bludgeon a maximum over long-on to bring up his fifty! This is the fastest half-century of the tournament, thus far. Four now. Hand Buttler the ‘Player of the Match’ award already. A lot of jeers and boos ring across the stadium as Warner fumbles in the deep, while making a diving stop.
ENG 82/1 in 8 overs: Malan survives by the skin of his teeth as Starc unleashes a vicious toe-crusher. The left-handed Englishman responds in style off the very next delivery – cut through point for four. Stand and deliver; Buttler is turning the heat on at the Ring of Fire. Back-to-back boundaries.
ENG 68/1 in 7 overs: Australia reviews after umpire Menon adjudges Roy safe as the ball thuds into his pads while trying to execute the reverse sweep. No bat involved. Pitching in line, impact’s in line, wickets hitting. The decision has been overturned. Zampa into the attack and immediately among wickets. Slip in place for Malan, who has just walked in.
ENG 66/0 in 6 overs: The fifty’s up for England, in quick time, courtesy a humongous maximum off Buttler’s blade. 94m. AND AGAIN! Tonked. Same length on offer. Same result. 95m, this one. This was Buttler’s 300th six in T20s. This is now the highest PowerPlay score in this edition of the T20 WC, surpassing AUS’ 63/0 vs SL.
ENG 48/0 in 5 overs: An optimistic 5 per cent have voted for an Australia win on the ICC website. Hmm… Interesting. Buttler somehow creates some room and squeezes a Hazlewood yorker through the off-side to run three. Precisely where his youth hockey experience comes to use. Muscled away by Buttler… one bounce and rams into the fence. Surprisingly, there is no sign of dew yet. It is extremely humid though.
ENG 37/0 in 4 overs: Spin has been introduced. Agar to do the honours. Wide down leg. Buttler dances down the track to slice it for a maximum into the second tier. England motoring on. It’d want to get done with the game as soon as possible.
ENG 27/0 in 3 overs: Oops, Cummins starts off with a wide. No ball now… This is bound to hurt Australia further. A dot ball off the Free Hit. Cummins will be relieved. SIX! Roy shimmies down the track and takes the aerial route over deep mid-wicket. Bat speed – 143 kph. Blimey!
ENG 13/0 in 2 overs: Metronomic Test-match length, this, from Hazlewood and Roy does well to punch it away to the ropes.
ENG 5/0 in 1 over: A 138 kph delivery to start with from Starc; this was bowled right in the zone. Roy is off the mark off the second ball with a single. The fifth ball is pitched short and Buttler gets on top of the rising delivery to pull it firmly between mid-wicket and mid-on for four.
Buttler and Roy saunter towards the centre as the Aussies take their positions on the field. Starc has the new ball in hand. England would hope to continue its good form in Dubai. The side has won five out of its last seven matches here.
TARGET — ENGLAND NEEDS 126 TO WIN
AUSTRALIA INNINGS
AUS 125 in 20 overs: Pumped straight down the ground as Mills bowls a slower, fuller one to Starc. Four runs. Zampa starts walking even before the dreaded three letters flash on the giant screen. Runs himself out in search of a quick single as Hazlewood comes to crease. Well, hello… Starc swivels and dispatches one over fine leg for six! The Australians have been bundled out as Starc departs, caught behind off the very last delivery of the innings.
AUS 112/8 in 19 overs: Finch is a goner as Bairstow takes a blinder at long-off. Knocked him over! Cummins falls off the very next. This was bowled right in the blockhole. Jordan, the death-overs specialist, is truly up and running.
AUS 110/6 in 18 overs: WICKET! My, oh, my… Agar holes out to Livingstone as the 47-run partnership comes to an end. Cummins in at 8. And goes the distance straightaway, does Cummins. 79m. 100 up. And again! You could hear the sweet sound of the willow from miles away. Goes over deep mid-wicket and into the stands.
AUS 95/5 in 17 overs: Woakes in to bowl his last six. Sprays his second as umpire Menon signals a wide. Slower one, banged short and Agar goes for the biggy. Moeen was stationed at the ropes but this just manages to sail all the way. Another six! Smoked over wide long-on this time. Morgan reviews for LBW again. Pitching outside leg, this, as England loses a review. Leg bye signaled as well.
AUS 75/5 in 16 overs: Somebody needs to switch gears right about now. Agar has faced 11 deliveries, scoring only four. Finch 34 off 41. Ideally, it should be the skip. Agar slashes hard but miscues. It’ll just be a single to put Finch on strike. Morgan at extra cover does well to save a few runs. Might have just hurt a finger though. Four! Finch sits deep in his crease and slaps a boundary behind point.
AUS 67/5 in 15 overs: Mills starts off with a slower delivery and Finch goes downtown. This wasn’t timed to perfection but Finch just gets enough on it. Two in a row. Bowled around the same length, the right-handed Finch gets another delivery in his hitting arc. Creamed through extra cover on this occasion.
AUS 57/5 in 14 overs: Agar gets away with a poor slice at a loopy delivery from Livingstone. It hangs in the air for a while before dipping in no man’s land.
AUS 53/5 in 13 overs: Rashid to bowl out. Agar inside edges one onto his pads. Was there an edge again? Seems like it. The England players go up in unison but turns out there was some bat on it before the ball went on to crash into Finch’s pads.
AUS 51/5 in 12 overs: Fifty up for Australia. Wade perishes as Australia slips further. The toe end of the bat causes another AUS undoing as Roy takes a fine catch at long-on.
AUS 49/4 in 11 overs: Mills into the attack. Four! Wade gets one to drop just in front of the ropes. Seemed like it was going all the way, initially. Reload… Mills will have to run in again as what was supposed to be the last delivery of the over strays down leg.
AUS 41/4 in 10 overs: Livingstone dishing out some real gold for his skipper. He keeps the batters in check with some tight lines. Finch and Wade keep their anchors down and continue to tread in singles as we reach the halfway mark.
AUS 37/4 in 9 overs: Rashid loops one in and Finch tonks him over extra cover. Excellent fielding in the deep from Woakes as he stops a boundary. Another five-run over and England continues to mount pressure on Finch.
AUS 32/4 in 8 overs: Livingstone into the attack. He maintains a shortish length while attacking the stumps. Finch and Wade nudge about the gaps to find a couple of singles and five runs come off the over. Australia absolutely needs to step up on the pedal now.
AUS 27/4 in 7 overs: Rashid to Stoinis. OUT! Hits flush on the front pad and the umpire raises his finger. Absolutely plumb there and Australia slips further down the barrel. This is a cracking googly from Rashid as Stoinis sets himself deep in the crease, completely misreading the line. Wade joins Finch. He finds a fine boundary to get going. Rashid drags it short and Wade slices it past backward point for four.
AUS 21/3 in 6 overs: Woakes to continue. What a spell this from Woakes. Finch is pinned to the crease with the nagging deliveries which zip in. Finch leans forward and keeps them off his pads. This is now the second lowest total in the PowerPlay, thus far, in this edition of the tournament.
AUS 19/3 in 5 overs: Is that sneaking down as well? Finch maybe in some trouble here. Nitin Menon isn’t interested. Morgan will go upstairs though. Umpire’s Call… Finch heaves a sigh of relief as England retains its review. The ENG quicks, Jordan in this case, are asking questions of the Aussies with every delivery.
AUS 15/3 in 4 overs: Woakes continues to stick to his stock delivery, not giving the batter any room to work with. Maxwell reviews as umpire Marais Erasmus raises his finger post a confident LBW appeal. There’s the Snicko — Flat line when the ball passes the bat… AND THREE REDS IT IS! What a night this is turning out to be for Morgs’ boys. Stoinis is in.
AUS 11/2 in 3 overs: Has Woakes just claimed the catch of the tournament already? A one-handed stunner at mid-on sees Smith depart for 1 off Jordan’s bowling. Gets the toe end of the bat on the odd outswinger. A little bit of shape again as Maxwell enters in only the third over of the game. Well, who would have thought?!
AUS 8/1 in 2 overs: Woakes to share the new ball. WICKET! Brilliant start from England as Warner saunters down the track and gets the faintest of nicks on the ball on its way to Buttler. Woakes continues to extract movement off the surface and bother Smith, who has just walked in.
AUS 6/0 in 1 over: Two men out at long-on and deep mid-wicket for Australia’s opening pair. Moeen hasn’t been handed the new ball today, probably because it’ll be Finch facing him at the other end. The Aussie skipper is known to go against off-spinners. However, Adil adds some flight on his fifth delivery and that sees Finch pick up the first four of the innings off some leg-spin nevertheless.
Warner and Finch make their way to the crease. Rashid to open the bowling for England. The players take a knee, united against racism. Let’s play!
– 07:24 PM IST: The players follow the umpires to the middle. Time for the national anthems. England is up first.
WHAT THEY SAID

ENG vs AUS MATCH PREVIEW
An in-form England will face a buoyant Australia with Group 1 bragging rights up for grabs in a Super 12 game at the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in Dubai today.
Both teams are coming on the back of facile wins; Australia beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets at the same venue and England thrashed Bangladesh by eight wickets in Abu Dhabi. David Warner and Aaron Finch were big pluses against Sri Lanka. Australia was able to control the game during the middle overs through Adam Zampa and Mitchell Starc.
But Sri Lanka batters targeted the fifth and sixth bowlers — Glenn Maxwell (16 off his only over) and Marcus Stoinis (0-35 off three overs). England will look to exploit the potential fifth-bowler weakness. Pat Cummins, however, indicated that Australia is unlikely to change combination.
“Maxy (Maxwell) bowling one in the first six, that means now Starcy (Starc) can have an extra over through the middle. You saw he took a couple of wickets in the middle overs. We were able to do that because of Maxy,” Cummins said on Friday.

On the flip side, England’s bowling attack has been ruthless. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes toppled Bangladesh with combined figures of 3 for 27 in the PowerPlay. Moeen has bowled all seven of his overs on the trot – four in a row against the West Indies, and three more against Bangladesh. The matchup between Warner and Moeen will be crucial.
Tymal Mills has been incisive at the death. England’s batting has looked in good shape but hasn’t been put under pressure. A top-of-the-table clash with Australia could be a timely litmus test. All five matches held in Dubai at this World Cup have been won by the side batting second.

“There’s always an advantage in chasing, statistically, regardless of the country that you’re playing in,” Eoin Morgan said.
“We’ve only played one night game so far, and there was actually no dew for the whole evening, even though the game didn’t go the whole duration.”
The winner of this match will inch closer to the semifinals.
