On Saturday night, Showtime Championship Boxing comes to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas for a ticket that leads to a clash for the WBA second weightlifting title. In this fight, Jamal James will put his title at stake against Radzhab Butaev, tied.

James (27-1, 12 KOs) is looking for a shot to win the real world WBA title, which Yordenis Ugas currently has. The shot against Ugas would also give James a chance to avenge the loss of 2016 as a result of grief. Ugas has moved on to bigger things, including running as a real world champion and beating Manny Pacquiao. Meanwhile, James has mostly stood still, as the years have gone by, now 33 years old.

The WBA has organized a four-player tournament where Ugas is defending his belt against Eimantas Stanionis and James against Butaev.

Of course, getting to that rematch that James wants with Ugas and getting his world title chances overcomes Butaev, and that’s no small task. In fact, Butaev is now a small favorite to fight.

Butaev (13-0, 10 KOs) is a pressure fighter who kept his perfect record when he canceled Alexander Besputin’s 2019 loss due to a failed drug test by Besputin.

The fight is largely about whether Butaev can be consistent in the high-pressure attack, or whether James can be disciplined and keep the fight away.

This card also marks the return of Jaron “Boots” Ennis ’main welterweight at the main event against Thomas Dulorme. Ennis (27-0, 25 KOs) remains stunned every time he enters the ring. He scored a major KO against Sergey Lipinets in April and is looking to get another big win on Saturday night at the age of 24. Dulorm, meanwhile, has lost to main opponents Eimantas Stanionis and Jamal James.

James can be allowed to go to war from the inside out when his reach and use of technical skills to cross paths will benefit him. Butaev sometimes succumbs to pressure and falls into periods of reduced activity, which bit him against Besputin, who failed drug testing before Butaev was saved from his record loss. If Butaev moves forward and lures James into an inner struggle, this is Butaev’s struggle to win.
