Eric Adams, a Brooklyn neighborhood president who put public safety at the center of his campaign to become mayor of New York, was leading a field of 13 Democratic candidates in Tuesday’s first election, though the result will be known in the coming weeks.

With the 2019 ranking system approved for use in New York primaries and special elections by referendum, voters would select five candidates to vote.
