Eric Carle, the best-known author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar children’s classic, has died at the age of 91, according to a post on his publisher’s official Instagram account.

The book, first published in 1969, features a caterpillar that eats a lot of food for a week before finally appearing as a beautiful butterfly.

With its distinctive works of art and subtle concepts of education, the book has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 60 languages.

“We share with heavy hearts the author and illustrator of Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other beloved classics who died on May 23 at the age of 91,” Penguin Kids wrote in a statement. On Twitter.

The Washington Post reported that the perpetrator died at his home in Northampton, Massachusetts, on Sunday.

“When asked when he thinks he’s been so popular with Caterpillar for so long, Carl said,‘ I think it’s a book of hope. Children need hope. You, a small insignificant caterpillar, can become a beautiful butterfly and fly into the world with your talent, ”she says in a statement on her official Instagram account.
