FIFA World Cup qualifiers: Krul was relegated from the Netherlands

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal left longtime substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul on Friday as he was named the 24-man squad for this month’s decisive World Cup qualifiers.

The Dutch will take on Montenegro on November 13 at home in Podgorica and Norway three days later in Rotterdam, trying to get first place in Group G and qualify for next year’s Qatar finals.

The Netherlands are two points ahead of second-placed Norway after winning the last four qualifiers.

Krule, 33, has spent more than a decade in the Netherlands national team and abroad, mostly as a substitute goalkeeper, but after joining Bundesliga-based Mark Flekken for the first time in Freiburg last month, the order failed.

The Norwich City goalkeeper won his first of 15 friendly matches against Brazil in 2011.

A minute before the end of extra time against Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup quarter-final, Van Gaal brought in the fame, specifically for his ability to stop penalties in shooting, where he made two stops to get the Dutch into the midfield.

However, throughout his international career, Krul has been a substitute, rarely having the opportunity to start or get off the bench.

It was the second chance behind Jasper Cillessen ahead of this year’s European Championships.

When Cillessen was ruled out due to a COVID-19 infection, coach Frank de Boer turned to veteran Maarten Stekelenburg to play at the tournament.

Since Van Gaal returned as coach in September, Justin Bijlow has preferred him as his first choice, even though he has been without a cap before, in another blow to Krulen.

The Dutch team is also without attackers Luuk de Jong and Cody Gakpo due to injuries.
