Floyd Mayweather is back on track. No, the former five-time champion will not be taking part in the official boxing match on Sunday night, but the retired pound king will be taking part in an exhibition. And he may have found his match in terms of marketing potential. Mayweather will take on YouTube and social media star Logan Paul in an eight-round contest at Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Gardens, on a four-fight ticket to be broadcast live on Showtime PPV (20.00 ET).

Mayweather has not officially fought for TKO over UFC star Conko McGregor in 2017 for his perfect 50-0 record. However, Tenshin Nasukawa has taken part in another exhibition against the much smaller Japanese kickboxer in 2019, and after the three qualifiers he got the first round knockout.

Paul, meanwhile, has only officially fought once, losing the split decision in the face of another KSI YouTube star. He has hired some highly trained partners and coaches to take the sport seriously and make an effort to make money for the much lesser champion on Sunday night.

Mayweather and his team, for their part, have not even considered the possibility of “losing” this competition, either through a stoppage after eight days or in the eyes of the public. Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said the loss of Paul would be “unthinkable”.

And to get things started, first NFL wide receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson will make his debut in a four-round showdown against Brian Maxwell.

Brian Campbell: We can’t forget the physical advantages that Paul will bring into the ring. The former high school wrestler and footballer is 18 years younger than Mayweather, is six inches tall and four inches long. He also expects to weigh between 45 and 50 rounds. Mayweather has never fought anyone over 154 pounds and Paul weighed 199.5 pounds in his professional debut. He hopes that these never-before-seen obstacles will give Mayweather at least a break or two as he measures the speed and time of his younger enemy’s hand. But once he’s adapted, Mayweather doesn’t have to have a problem (even retiring at 44) to land hard, clean shooters whenever he wants. There will be no judges and no winners to be announced, which means that if Mayweather wants to claim victory away as a basis for “everyone to see”, he will have to knock Paul out. I think he can and will do so around Day 5, but he will have to take some chances to make that happen, which means showing a 44-year-old chin to a man over 50 pounds over the same. Look for Mayweather in a fight that plays more credibly than many expected at the end of the playoffs.
