The great Brazilian footballer Pele paid tribute to his legendary friend Diego Maradona on Thursday on the first anniversary of the Argentine’s 60th birthday.

“A year without Diego. Friends forever,” Pel wrote on Instagram, posting a photo of the two of them embracing with a big smile.

Pele and Maradona, who have never faced each other on the field, often compete for the title of best footballer in history.

But Pele, 81, has left behind their bad rivalry since Maradona’s death, instead of focusing on the warm friendship they also shared.

“The world has lost a legend,” Maradona wrote the day he died of a heart attack.

“One day, I hope, we’ll play football together in heaven.”

In 2000, Pele and Maradona were named the best players of the 20th century by FIFA together – a Brazilian selected by an expert jury, an Argentine in the popular vote of the fans.
