The armed group says Hussam Abu Harbeed, one of his own leaders in Gaza, was killed by an Israeli air strike.
An Israeli airstrike in Gaza has killed Islamic Jihad leader Hussam Abu Harbeed, the armed group said.
The killings on Monday are likely to be a tough response from a group fighting the Hamas-led movement in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military said in a statement that Harbeed “has been behind several terrorist anti-tank missile missiles against Israeli civilians.”
Shortly after Harbeed was killed, Islamic Jihad said it fired rockets at the Israeli coastal city of Ashdod.
At least three Palestinians were also killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza on Monday, doctors said, after heavy Israeli airstrikes.
The Israeli army said Gaza fighters fired about 60 rockets into Israeli cities last night, down from 120 to 200 in the previous two nights.
Hamas has said its attacks are revenge for Israel for “ongoing attacks on civilians” and has called the dead civilians “premeditated killings.”
At least 200 Palestinians on the Gaza Strip, including 58 children, have been killed since the last violence began two weeks ago.
More than 1,300 Palestinians were also injured.
