Protection of German children regulators are on the verge of blocking one of the largest pornographic websites in the world. Officials will issue a blocking order to the country’s largest Internet service provider, a pornographic website, which it believes is xHamster, saying it should be inaccessible to Germany’s 83 million population.

Blocking order, which may be issued by the Commission for the Protection of Minors in the media in the coming weeks (Committee for the Protection of Minors in the Media in German or KJM), xHamster has begun failing age verification checks to prevent anyone under the age of 18 from entering pornography. The order is the last salvation of the two-year campaign by regulators to force all pornographic websites available in Germany to implement age verification controls.

Legislators around the world — including Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and some U.S. states — want to put in place more measures to prevent children from accessing adult material online. But the German move is one of the toughest measures ever taken, compared to censorship by critics.

German officials are working against four major pornography websites, according to KJM president Marc Jan Eumann. The group, which represents the country’s 14 state media authorities, is responsible for enforcing a comprehensive pact agreed by all states on child protection. In addition to other German laws on child protection. Eumann refuses to confirm that KJM is taking four websites that are taking legal action. However, German reporting he says The cases are against xHamster and three websites, YouPorn, Pornhub and MyDirtyHobby, all owned by MindGeek.

Regulators have been trying to force pornographic websites to implement age verification checks — which could lead to uploading identity documents — since September 2019. Much of this has been driven by a state regulator, Tobias Schmid, of the North Rhine State Media Authority. Westphalia, who has been he has criticized her for her views on sex, but the issue is also being handled by KJM.

Eumann says companies should put in place age verification systems to ensure that visitors are not children. The law says pornographic content should only be available to adults, Eumann says. In four cases, pornographic websites, which have German versions, complain that they do not have age verification systems.

A pornographic site, known as xHamster, was first contacted by regulators in March 2020 and later others by June 2020. Requests for age verification have become a legal debate and three cases are pending hearing in one of the administrative courts in Düsseldorf, Eumann says.

In the case of XHamster it is believed that there was no response from the website owners. As a result, the case is believed to be the most advanced and could lead to an order to block the site in Germany in the coming weeks. In late June 2021, KJM identified the company hosts xHamster and he asked to make the website unavailable. “We have a blocking order for suppliers based in the Netherlands,” says Eumann. “If the host provider doesn’t comply, we’ll take the final step.” That order expired earlier this week, the KJM confirmed. “The last step is to take action against the German access provider, a blockade order,” Eumann added.

In fact, this means issuing a blocking order to the largest German web providers – including Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, O2 and 1 & 1 – to block the website from people who want to enter Germany. The largest providers will be targeted first, followed by the smaller ones, and a blockchain at the Domain Name System (DNS) level is likely to occur. When you browse the web, the URL you type in your browser’s address bar becomes an IP address via DNS. Setting the DNS block means that anyone who enters the pornographic site address in the browser will not be able to view the page.
