BOGOTA (Reuters) – Former Haitian justice ministry official Joseel Felix Badio has promised to assassinate Haitian President Jovenel Moise, Colombian police chief Jorge Vargas said on Friday.
Haitian President Jovenel Moise was shot dead on July 7 in the hills above the Port-au-Prince when gunmen armed with rifles attacked his private residence.
An investigation into last week’s assassination of Moses has so far revealed that Badio gave the order three days before the assassination attempt on the president, Vargas said in an audio message.
According to Vargas, Badio could have ordered the killing of former Colombian soldiers, Duberney Capador and German Rivera, who were initially contacted to conduct security services.
“Several days earlier, apparently three years ago, Joseph Felix Badio (Haiti), a former justice ministry official who worked in the anti-corruption unit with the General Intelligence Service, told Capador and Rivera that the president should be killed in Haiti,” Vargas said.
“We are assisting in all the support tasks for the ongoing talks with the captured Colombians,” he added.
The group of killers included 26 Colombians and two hat-Americans, according to Haitian authorities. Eighteen Colombians have been captured, five on the run and three – including Capador – killed.
Many Colombians accused of taking part in the murder went to the country as bodyguards, Colombian President Ivan Duque said on Thursday, but others had detailed knowledge of the planned murder.
Relatives and colleagues of some of the detained Colombians have also said they have hired suspects to work as bodyguards.
