Moïse was killed and his wife wounded in an attack on the home by unidentified gunmen, the caretaker prime minister says.
Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was killed and his wife wounded in an attack on their home, the caretaker Prime Minister said.
A group of unidentified gunmen attacked Moïse’s private residence on Wednesday night and shot dead him, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said.
Joseph said he was now in charge of the country and urged citizens to remain calm, stressing that the police and army would ensure the safety of the people.
Haiti, America’s poorest country, was already in a precarious political situation before the assassination, becoming increasingly unstable and unhappy with Moïse.
Moses, at the age of 53, ruled by decree that the country had not held elections for more than two years and that the opposition had demanded his resignation in recent months.
The assassination risks further destabilizing the Caribbean nation.
