How to return and exchange gifts or purchases that you do not want

[ad_1]

Everyone returns buying a gift or boost from time to time. It may not fit. It may not suit your taste. Maybe you asked for something on a whim (or you made a great deal of it) and now you have the buyer’s regret. Or maybe you want to read a book that praises the virtues of minimalism and turn that lifestyle around. Whether the gifts from relatives are well thought out or Amazon Prime requests are impulsive, the good news is that you can easily return things.

Whatever the logic of returning an item, you are not alone. The Calculations by the National Retail Federation that goods returned about $ 309 billion in 2019, about 8% of all sales. Around the holidays, roughly two-thirds of gifts return an article.

“Consumers are very accustomed to being able to return their goods,” said Larisa Summers, vice president of marketing and e-commerce at Optoro, a platform that helps recover costs of goods returned by vendors like Target and Staples. “I think a lot of consumers don’t realize how difficult it is for retailers.”

You might think that the returned merchandise will be replenished on the original shelf, but Summers said that’s only half the time. Other times, the returned goods are sold to other sellers or, worse, thrown away. Optoro estimates that the £ 5bn returned annually ends up in landfills.

So if you’re going to return holiday gifts or shopping, do it in a smart and sustainable way. Being smart gives you the best gift of all: a house and a planet that is not so clumsy.

Updated June 2021: Many of our return tips are still there; we have updated some deadlines and policies for returning some traders.

Basics

First: you have more time than you think. Although the “30 days after purchase” policy is a common year-round policy, most retailers adjust the return date around the shopping holiday to accommodate refunds. Because of Covid-19, we have seen that traditional return policies have also been extended.

If possible, make sure you pack the item with the label, accessories, and original packaging. If you do not exchange a defective product, make sure that your condition is in good condition. Summers said goods returned in their original packaging and original condition are much easier to sell. Without the original packaging, there is more chance of throwing away items.

Bring your receipt as well, especially if it’s a gift receipt. Generally, having one makes it easier to get your money back or store credit. Some stores will work with you to receive order information if you lose your receipt. In other merchants, you won’t be lucky. You need to show them the ID in some stores, so make sure you carry that as well.

Summers encourages you to share why you return a product. Sellers take this type of opinion seriously, as it helps reduce next year’s returns.

Lastly, find out about individual store policies. Some stores will adjust the policy for open or unopened products, while others will only accept refunds and exchanges in stores. We’ve rounded up the policies of some of the most reputable vendors, but it’s a good idea to understand the exact policies of the item you’re trying to return to before you go shopping.
