PARIS (Reuters) – Orange, France’s largest telecom operator, is on its way to appointing its new CEO Christel Heydemann, becoming the first woman to run a former monopoly in the midst of reforming her government, two sources said on Sunday.

The Orange council, which has been participating in Heydemann since 2017, will meet on Friday to formally appoint the new chief, sources on the subject added.

Heydemann, who currently directs European operations at the French electrical equipment group Schneider Electric (PA :), was not ready to comment immediately on Sunday.

Heydemann, 47, a graduate of France’s elite Polytechnique engineering school, will replace Stephane Richard at the head of the state-controlled group after a court found him guilty of complicity in the misuse of public funds.

Richard, who has run Orange for the past 12 years, denies being mistaken.

Heydemann’s name has been circulating in the French press for some time, and he has been nominated as a favorite candidate for the French Ministry of Finance, which has a 23% stake in the Orange government.

The French weekly JDD reported Heydemann’s likely appointment to a council meeting on Friday.
