Syrian prison attacks kill more than 100 people, clashes continue ISIL / ISIS News

Hasakehen’s ISIL attack has been one of the deadliest since the armed group lost ground in 2019.

At least 120 people have been killed in clashes between the US-backed. Kurdish-led forces and ISIL (ISIS) fighters after an attack on a Syrian prison.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “at least 77 IS members and 39 Kurdish fighters, including internal security forces, prison guards and counter-terrorism forces,” were killed in the attack on Thursday.

A video released on Saturday showed gunmen infiltrating prisons and raising the group’s black flag, saying they were attacking a Kurdish-led Ghwayran prison in the city of Hasakeh. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Sunday it had hardened the siege, aided by U.S.-led troops, and killed 17 of its soldiers.

The SDF initially said it had thwarted the breach and arrested 89 fighters who were in the shelter nearby, but later admitted that the prisoners had taken some parts of the facility.

An SDF spokesman also said they had recovered 104 prisoners who had escaped from the militias, but did not specify the total number of those who exploded.

The bombers detonated a car bomb near the prison gate, prompting dozens of prisoners to flee to the Ghwayran neighborhood.

The SDF’s top military commander, Mazloum Abadi, said on Friday that ISIL had mobilized “most of the cells in its bedrooms” to organize a prison escape.

The U.S. Pentagon has confirmed that the coalition against ISIL has carried out airstrikes in favor of the SDF because it wanted to end the prison escape.

The violence was the arrest of thousands of ISIL suspected members of detention centers after they were defeated with US aid in northern and eastern Syria.

It was unclear how many inmates were in jail, which is the largest facility the SDF has detained for thousands. Human Rights Watch estimates that the SDF has about 12,000 men and boys suspected of ISIL affiliation, including 2,000 to 4,000 foreigners in some 50 countries.

Fighting has led to the exodus of civilians from neighborhoods near Ghwayran as families fleeing the harsh winter cold have been shut down by Kurdish forces.

“Thousands of people have fled their homes near prisons, fleeing to areas where relatives live,” Kurdish Sheikhmous Ahmed, an official with the Kurdish administration, told AFP.

Release of comrades

ISIL has hit guerrilla-style attacks Since losing the last significant territory in Syria in 2019.

Despite the failure, ISIL sleeping cells have carried out deadly attacks on the SDF and government forces on the western bank of the Tigris River in eastern Syria.

Releasing comrades has been the main tactic of the group. In 2014, when ISIL flooded Iraq and Syria, ISIL committed several prison violations.

It was not immediately clear that the prison breach was part of a coordinated operation at the headquarters to join a counterattack. a military base in nearby Iraq, or the action of a local ISIL cell.
